Twenty years after Mandela's release,
some things have not changed

KHAYELITSHA: South Africans have accused the African National Congress of failing to fulfil Nelson Mandela's vision of a new ''rainbow nation'' even as they celebrated his release from jail 20 years ago yesterday.
Mr Mandela walked out of Victor Verster prison outside Paarl in the Western Cape after 27 years to a hero's reception and a country racked with self-doubt.
Reaching out to whites, the man who would become his country's first black president said he bore no bitterness towards them despite his decades in jail, while at the same time giving blacks hope for improvements in their poverty-stricken lives.
However, a vast township outside Cape Town shows the distance that still has to be travelled.
